THE BALLAD OF MR. CONRAD

Mr. Conrad had deep black eyes,

So sullen and sad they were.

Speaking to me of all the things,

He’d seen, touched, felt and lost.

He spoke too little, smiled too little;

Yet his eyes seemed to speak all too well.

Those deep pits of vulnerability lay bare,

As his eyes told stories like no other.

Fabrications, talked tales were regaled;

His eyes told me all of these with candour.

Of a life during the Great War,

Of friends he’d made and left behind.

Mr. Conrad slept too little lately,

He stood by the window, he smoked thick cigars.

His sullen cheeks have made way,

As expressions were spoken yet full of misery.

He did not speak much of the war,

Yet he spoke of his friends with wanton ways.

His eyes would light up as he searched for words,

To explain the memories that his heart held close.

Like bees to a stalk we’d flock around,

Listening to tales of bravado and lechery.

Yet towards the end, his eyes would speak,

The pointlessness of it all, as silence took hold.

Bonds were made and died the next,

Repressed in some dark corner of his mind.

All of his youth laid waste,

On the hallowed hills of Champagne.

For these boys had become men too soon,

Morality had become a looming shadow.

All the happiness stolen too soon,

All that remained with Mr. Conrad were eyes of gloom.

This is nothing but my appreciation for this powerful image and an insight into his amazing portfolio.

Check out his books and other such images, it is truly something else.
