TULIPS
I read the papers too often lately,
Too often to know the stories like my own.
I sleep close to our radio,
It now rests by our bed, singing tunes of longing.
I walk our children to school everyday,
Hoping you’d be at the doorstep when I get home.
Your arms spread wide, you’d stand there
In a fit of joy I’d be running into your embrace.
I played that reel too many times in my head,
That sometimes I stand awhile by the door looking out.
I keep unfolding and folding your flannels in the closet,
Just to tell myself you’re still around.
The last time I walked down to your grave,
With the tulips that you love, I thought of these moments.
Moments that I’d played over and over in my head,
Seldom did I know I’d open the door to nothing but some lost memories of you.
